Following last weeks update, it has been confirmed that Harry and Meghan will no longer be able to use SUSSEX ROYAL once they step down from royal duties. As you would expect, the core issue surrounded the use of ‘royal’.
Accordingly, the recently filed trade mark applications have been withdrawn. This is surprising given the number of SUSSEX ROYAL marks filed by third parties, which could have been prevented due to the earlier applications of the Duke and Duchess. These third parties may now seek to capitalise on the ‘brand’.
It will be interesting to see whether Harry and Meghan file new trade marks and what these look like.
Keep your eyes peeled for the new Sussex brand!
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are to stop using their "SussexRoyal" brand from spring 2020. The couple had been in discussions with aides and senior royals about using the name following their decision this year to step back from royal duties. But a spokesperson for the couple said it was agreed the word "royal" could not be used due to government rules. Applications to trademark the SussexRoyal brand have also been withdrawn.
